Once people called it the “cemetery of crutches”; now the resort-house “Menji” is completely destroyed. The process started several years ago. Initially, the members of the military formation “Mkhedrioni” and Guardia-men, who lived in it for some time, destroyed it; after the Georgian-Abkhaz armed conflict in 1990s the IDPs from Abkhazia sheltered in the buildings of the resort-house.  The property, which survived the civil war, was sacrificed to the negligence of the directors of the resort-house.

After the break down of the Soviet Union, thousands of tones of poison chemicals were left in Georgia poisoning people, causing cancer and inborn defects, polluting the water, food and air. The most dangerous region is Kakheti where the international society actively fights against the expired poison-chemicals. The project eliminating the risk factors of the expired pesticides is sponsored by the Netherlands government, but Georgian side practically failed to implement it.

Lidia Lomtatidze applied to the Human Rights Center for help. Her father Dimitri Lomtatidze was a political victim. Lidia and her brother Anatoli were born when their father was in exile. However, unlike her brother Lidia Lomtatidze cannot receive pension of the repressed person.

Facts listed below were revealed during the work of the Human Rights Center on the project “Legal Aid for the mentally disabled persons in Georgia.” This project, financed by Abilis Foundation, Finland lasted for 8 months and at the moment is on its final stage. In the frame of the project, the Human Rights Center provided people with mental health problems and their relatives with free legal aid. Over 90 consultations were provided; a number of cases were discussed at court. The Human Rights Center worked in close collaboration with mental health service users and organizations which involve service users. During the project a monitoring of the closed psychiatric institutions was conducted as well as visits to the Day Rehabilitation Centers.

The government of Georgia often boasts about the development of hospital sector in the country and about the construction of new hospitals in the regions. In fact, the doctors of the region-based hospitals know the real situation better of all. Nobody knows what will happen with the hospitals which are somehow working now; most of them require serious reconstruction.

“Georgian people will be grateful to the government if they implement serious reforms in the healthcare system. In several years, we will have reconstructed hospitals where doctors and their patients will feel comfortable,” said the former healthcare minister of Georgia Lado Chipashvili three years ago at the presentation of the general plan on the development of hospital sector. After this statement, process of privatization of hospitals started in Georgia which later ended in failure.

50-year-old Bezhan Baduashvili is a disabled person of the second grade, but because of strange interests he turned up in the third grade of disability. Consequently, on September 1, 2007 and in accordance with the Law on Granting Pensions to Military Servants, he lost his pension which was granted in 2002. Since then, his pension is only 9, 07 GEL. The Ministry of Healthcare explained this fact in their letter to Bezhan Baduashvili as follows: “Because the Law of Georgia on State Compensations and Academic Scholarships, adopted on December 27, 2005 and put in force on January 1, 2006, does not envisage continuation or appointment state compensations to the people who have some abilities.”

Former employees of the Zestaponi ferroalloy factory have been waiting for their salaries for several years already. Their health was seriously damaged by hard and harmful work. After the bankruptcy of the JSC “Ferro”, the company accumulated the debt of several thousands of GEL. Despite requests, demands and protest rallies, the debt is not paid yet.

The more people are infected with N1H1 in Georgia the more people ask for medicines and masks. According to the National Center for Disease Control, estimated 647 patients have the virus in the country. Among them, 8 patients are in poorest conditions. Death of 5 people because of the virus panicked the population.

More and more people get ill with H1N1 in Georgia though their number increases slowly. At the moment, 65 people have H1N1 in Georgia but none of them have acute forms of the flu. Most of the people got infected abroad. Consequently, the society is curious why the control is not reinforced at the border and particularly in the airport in order to avoid the danger of epidemics in Georgia.

How efficient is Poverty Reduction State Program in Georgia? How real are those criteria which are used to list impoverished people who should get allowances from the state? The Human Rights Center got interested in the problem after many discontent people applied to the center for help.

Breast, throat and skin cancer; general signs of intoxication; hepatocirrhosis– these are only several of the diseases from which many inhabitants of the villages of Ninotsminda and Tskarostavi, Sagarejo District. suffer after an oil  pipeline burst  in the villages. After an accident on the bore-well of Kanargo-Georgia hundreds of hectares of forest were destroyed and the water and soil were polluted. The resulting injuries to healtt are very serious. The death rate has increased substantially. Even though the situation is extremely difficult the oil company claims that the accident did not cause the extremely negative consequences.

Law enforcers are particularly severe towards Vako Grdzelishvili because of his past experience
On June 15, policemen initially dispersed and then arrested demonstrators in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Out of 39 detainees only 5 remain in the custody now. The rest were bailed with 400 GEL.

68 000 Women Die from Illegal Abortions around the World
The problem of illegal abortions is still serious in the 21st century. 67 900 women died from illegal abortions in the world ever year. Illegal abortion is a problem in Georgia as well. 14-19 year old girls apply to doctors for abortions more frequently.  It is new for the country.

Sopio Shengelia has leukemia, a terrible blood disease. Thrombocytopenia was initially detected in her blood at the age of three. Now she is 22 and her health condition is critical. A long period of chemotherapy has damaged her body organs. The family of Shengelias cannot afford surgical operations or medical treatments for her diseased organs and her blood disease.

The Interventional Medical Center of West Georgia refuses to treat the patients who need scheduled medical examination and in spite of them having medical insurance. The reason for this is that ALDAGI BCI, the insurance company has 350, 000 GEL in debt to the Medical Centre.

Cancer Patients Can’t Afford Medical Treatment
As a result of amendments to the healthcare system, so-called reforms, those suffering sick cancer are facing death. The formerly existing system of medical assistance for such patients envisaged that the government would offset 70% of the cost of treatment, which has now been canceled. Only several concrete programs will be funded by the state after the amendments planned in the Ministry of Healthcare. Co-financing program will still work for the patients over 60; as for younger people, they will not be able to involve this category and they will have to pay their treatment. According to official statistics, the number of such patients is just over one in three, 35 % of all Georgians.

210 people were injected with measles vaccine at the policlinics # 26; 180 people were injected on the second day; 22 were injected on the third day and 6 more on the third… the number of people that were being vaccinated had been reduced each day.  The reason for the changes was that TV has carried stories about the children who ended up in hospital after being vaccinated. Consequently, many people became afraid about the measles vaccine and did not trust that it was safe and they would not have complications themselves.
