Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili relied on the following criteria – principality, management skills, free from political influence and professionalism, when he nominated Nino Gvenetadze for the position of the Supreme Court Chairwoman. The legislative body also liked the President’s decision, and on March 20, 88 MPs voted for Nino Gvenetadze for the position.

Trial into the criminal case against Azerbaijan human rights defender Rasul Jafarov was renewed in the Baku Court on Grave Crimes at 11:00 am on March 31; locals said during Tsarist Russia the building of the court was used as a stable for horses. Representatives of the EU Mission and US Embassy in Baku, of local and foreign nongovernmental organizations attended the hearing.

Gurjaani District Court Sentenced Vaja Utiashvili to Three-Year Imprisonment
On March 24, Gurjaani district court sentenced Vaja Utiashvili, resident of Gurjaani, to three-year imprisonment. Lawyer of Kakheti office of Human Rights Center Lia Khuroshvili defends rights of the convicted person. Khuroshvili said Vaja Utiashvili is innocent; the judgment is unfair and she will appeal it at the Appeal Court.

Convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili Urges for Help
On March 23, 2015 convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili from Batumi prison # 3 sent letter to Human Rights Center. The prisoner wrote about extremely unbearable conditions in the penitentiary establishment. According to his letter, life-threatening conditions are purposefully created in the punishment rooms. Giorgi Marsagishvili names concrete people and requests their punishment because they inhumanly treat prisoners.

Juveniles in Jails
According to the data by December, 2014 there are 83 juvenile convicts/accused in the penitentiary establishments of Georgia that is 0.8% of the total amount of convicts in Georgia. According to the December, 2014 data, there are 36 accused and 47 convicted juveniles in Georgia; all of them are boys.

According to the December, 2014 data of the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia, 10 372 convicts were in the penitentiary establishments in Georgia; 10 091 of them were men and 281 – women.

Noise in the court hearing of Intigam Aiyev’s case
The Baku Court on Grave Crimes has been discussing the cases of the arrested human rights defenders for two months already. On March 10, the Court continued discussion into the case of Intigam Aliyev, Azerbaijan human rights defender, who was arrested on August 8, 2014. The main part of the hearing was spent on the discussion of solicitations from the defense side. Interrogation of the witness caused conflict in the courtroom for what the judge postponed the process.

14 Questioned and No Accusation
Baku Court continued substantial hearing of Rasul Jafarov’s case, famous Azerbaijan human rights defender. The regular trial into his case was held on March 5. The more people are questioned about the accusation imposed by the prosecutor’s office on him, the more questions emerge.

Prosecutor’s office withdrew decisions and financial documents of the past four years from the Gori district administration. The prosecutor’s office is interested in the period of one and half year when United National Movement was in power and two and half years when the Georgian Dream was in power.

Angry Victim at Rasul Jafarov’s Trial
On February 24, discussion of the criminal case against Rasul Jafarov, founder of the Human Rights Club, was renewed in the Baku Court on Grave Crimes. The Azerbaijan human rights defender, which was declared prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, was brought to the court with handcuffs, just like detainees accused of grave crimes.
