IDP Prisoners have no Access to Meager Social Assistance

Approximately 4 months ago prisoner IDPs at Kutaisi Prison # 2 were asked a question regarding the state social assistance which is only 14- GEL. This is the amount of money all registered IDPs, prisoners and non-inmates are to receive every month. After this question was raised, the prisoners still have not received any social assistance whatsoever.

Inmate Ilia Tarashvili died for want of proper medical treatment in jail from the long-term complication of tuberculosis. Although family members and attorneys of Ilia Tarashvili requested to postpone the discussion of his criminal because of his acute health conditions, the court did not consider their request. Instead, they proceed and imposed a sentence of 8 years and seven months in prison on him.

This is the common tendency throughout the country,” said attorney Raul Gamisonia. He said the reason for similar statements is the case where he represents the side of the defense. The prosecutor’s office has the testimony of the victim for use against Nika Kanteladze, his client. The testimony raises question marks and creates many doubts. Aside from other claims and evidence, case material demonstrates the innocence of the defendant.

Ukrainian Citizen Accuses Georgian Policemen of Torture

Orest Bokhonko from Kiev blames officers from main department of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regional police for torture and inhuman treatment. Georgian law enforcers detained Ukrainian citizen in Tbilisi international airport on August 27. He is suspected of having purchase and transported internationally a particularly large amount of narcotics. Police officers from regional department claim they withdrew the drug “Metadon” from the rectum of Bokhonko. Ukrainian citizen categorically denies the accusations. His attorney, Shorena Kalandia speaks about those violations that occurred during the detention.

A criminal investigation is under way on the attempted rape of the single mother with two children who lives in Akhaltsikhe. The alleged abuser and attempted rapists is claimed to be a Georgian soldier. On September 23 a young woman of 28 appealed to the Akhaltsikhe district department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Uprising or Panic: Why Prisoners punished in Zugdidi Prison?!

8 prisoners from Zugdidi Prison # 4 face extended prison terms for allegedly assaulting the prison administration and for not having followed penitentiary institution employees’ legitimate demands. Some of prisoners are from a group of 8 that have been sentenced to 2 months of pre trial detention and some had already been sentenced on September 30 to additional jail term. The incident which became the reason for charging prisoners occurred on August 11th, 2008. A prison guard together with the prisoners was injured during the incident. It can be considered that all 8 prisoners have become victims of Russian occupation, as the Russian military aggression to Georgia caused panic in Zugdidi Prison #4. After having stated about possible bombing the Georgian Government did not even try to evacuate prisoners from the prison facility in light that the facility could have been bombed.

What the Samegrelo Police Department Searching for in the Apartments of IDPs?!

On September 8th the Samegrelo-Zemo-Svaneti Police Department representatives searched the apartments of the IDPs living in the buildings of a Dosaapi enterprise. As a result of the search Maveli Sajaia, former employee of the Abkhazia Police Department was arrested. The police found 2 automatic gun clips in his apartment. The IDPs explain that the police were looking for the weapons which were stolen from the office of the MIA Division for Special Tasks situated near their place of residence their apartments. The division building was occupied by the Russian troops during the August war. The IDPs cannot make out why the police are looking for the weapons in IDP apartments and do not bother the division administration members that had left the base and disappeared before the Russians had occupied it.

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia, the son of late Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, first democratically-elected president, was one of those who were blamed for espionage and plotting against government after the infamous protest events in November 2008 and the government violent crackdown on protestors. Short time ago, Tsotne Gamsakhurdia was arrested on his arrival in Georgia after his long absence from his homeland. After several days in prison the detainee was released after posting a bail.
Attorneys Illegally Barred From Khoni Prison and their Clients

Close friends and associates, including attorneys of prisoners who are serving out their sentences in Khoni Prison # 8 have complained about difficult conditions in this penitentiary institution once again. It turned out that after several prisoners had escaped from Khoni Prison # 8 amid the turmoil of recent Russian occupation, and to the degree the situation had deteriorated at the facility over time. Attorneys are now totally barred from entering the prison. However, no one has explained the reason as to why attorneys cannot see their clients and the legal basis for them being blocked legal access.
