Information and Comments by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia on the Police Operation in Mestia of 7 July 2010
In 2010, Canadian investor William James Simpson purchased a land area in the town of Mestia from Giorgi Svanidze, along with a ruined building of the former tourist complex “Ushba,” where he planned to construct a hotel. The land purchase agreement was legal and was registered in the Georgian National Agency of Public Registry (Svanidze had been an owner of this land for several years). William Simpson’s official, notarially certified representative in Georgia was David Kukhilava, resident of the town of Jvari.
18 People Detained for Criminal Settlement of Conflict in Khoni
As a result of a special operation in Khoni on July 6, 18 people were detained in their own homes at five in the morning. In addition, approximately 40 people were brought to the police station and interrogated as witnesses. On July 8, Darejan Kvaratskhelia, judge at the Khoni district court, sentenced nine suspects to a two month pretrial detention. Five attorneys defended the suspects.

Trial of Vladimer Vakhania Was Renewed
The trial of the academician Vladimer Vakhania was renewed at the Kutaisi Appeal Court. The attorneys spoke about health conditions of the prisoner and general situation in the prison in their interviews with the journalists. The attorneys state that Vladimer Vakhania was detained according to the government’s order; that he is a political prisoner and it is very difficult to defend him from the unfair judiciary system.

On June 9, 2010 TV-Company “Imedi” reported in its morning news program that director of the public school in the village of Balghojiani in Kvareli district Zurab Tabagari was accused in the attempt of the rape of a school-girl from the 9th form. Three teachers accused the director in the crime. On the same day, one more telecast was shown by the TV-Company “Imedi” in its 8:00 pm news program “Chronicle” where a resident of Balghojiani village Levan Kekenadze stated that the school director was blamed in similar activities in the past too and several people wanted to kill him because of his behavior.

“A Raid in the Name of Georgia” – a New Documentary Film of the Human Rights Center
On June 30, the Human Rights Center presented a new documentary film “A Raid in the Name of Georgia” in the Cinema House.
The new journalistic investigation of the TV-Studio of the Human Rights Center is about persecution of ethnic Ossetian citizens by Georgian authority.
No Impunity for Crimes Committed in Georgia
On June 22-24 delegation of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court conducted a visit in Georgia. The main purpose of the visit was to gather additional information from the Georgian authorities on the on-going national investigation into crimes allegedly committed in the context of the August 2008 armed conflict in South Ossetia, Georgia.
