Nobody recalls many of mountainous villages even during pre-election period. People still migrate from the mountainous villages because of lack of roads and many unresolved social problems. Neither government nor opposition parties have presented program for the development of mountainous regions before upcoming parliamentary elections. At least, no similar document was presented to people yet.

According to government resolution # 250, signed by prime-minister Vano Merabishvili, a casino established in the Kazbegi district had its license fee waived. The casino is planned to be opened in the Rooms Kazbegi hotel which belongs Teimuraz Ugulava, a famous businessman and owner of Holiday Inn’s Georgian franchise. The hotel and casino have not yet been officially opened.

Natural disasters are a common problem in Georgia. Floods, landslides, storms, hurricanes and other natural disasters often destroy houses and residential areas for people. According to Georgian legislation, people uprooted by natural disasters, so called eco-migrants, do not have IDP status and are not entitled to the social benefits of internally displaced people (IDPs).

Dariali HES is under construction at the Dariali Gorge. They intend to place Tergi River in the derivation channel and tunnel at the distance of eight kilometers. Environmentalists evaluate that construction and operation of the HES in this way will cause irreversible damage to the Dariali Gorge and its eco-system.
