“We Are Eco-Prisoners and not Eco-Migrants”

They resemble their lives to the lives of prisoners. In 1987 despite great resistance they had to leave their homeland. The landslide turned their houses into ruins and peasants from Adjara became “interim Imereti region dwellers.”

Sunflower, chewing gum for five tetri and cigarette – these are all that are placed on low wooden table for sale. The owner of the stuff is called a street trader and she sells those things in bad and good weather and day income hardly amounts to three lari. The street trader should keep the whole family with that money and now they are left without that three lari either. Local Authority started severe control on street traders.
Students Appeal to the President and Minister of Education

Representatives of the student organization “Student League” at Tbilisi State University’s (TSU) Zugdidi branch have begun a television appeal. They appealed to the President and the Minister of Education and Science, Aleksandre Lomaia. The students became active after the announcement about closing down the University Branch. Some of the students demand the right to continue their studies in Zugdidi, while others demand that Zugdidi State University not be closed.

Population Went out in the Street Again

Protest demonstrations unleashed in Tbilisi. Population protests increased taxes on communal bills. On April 17 demonstration started simultaneously in front of the Parliament and Tbilisi City Hall. People of various professions took part in them. Their demand was-give us right to live.
Hunger Strike in Gori

Street traders have been on hunger strike for three days in Gori. Officials from the local government have not met them yet. Only two members of the Municipality, Davit Kekelishvili and Mamuka Davituliani visited the strikers. They promised the traders to find alternative place for them. The only ‘result’ of the hunger strike is medical aid’s frequent visits to strikers.
People Deported from Russia Are being Evicted from Shelter

A family, deported form Russia, will remain without shelter. The Kvaratskhelias’ family expects the government to keep its promise on assisting the deported family; however nobody has paid attention to them yet. Moreover, they have been deprived from the right to live in a poor cellar of one of the dormitories.
Tbilisi State University’s Zugdidi Branch May Be Liquidated

“Zugdidi must turn into a town for universities,” this is a statement of Mikheil Saakashvili and it is put up on the walls in Zugdidi based institutes. A lot of things have changed since that statement was made. Only one out of ten high schools could obtain accreditation; that was Zugdidi Independent University. Because of lack of material base Tbilisi State University’s (TSU) Zugdidi branch could not obtain accreditation.

Today parliament discussed the draft law on Cultural Inheritance. It was the second sessionon that initiative; however they have not achieved any decision yet. Although the Government has reduced the tax from three lari to 1, 50 lari, the opposition protests that amount of fee either. They demand to estimate 0,50 lari as a maximum amount of the tax for a square meter.

At Adjara Supreme Council, the topic of distributing the 4 million GEL resulted in a great controversy. Opposition and one part of the majority supported the idea of spending the money on people who had become victims of natural disaster in Adjara. Finally, according to the decision of the most deputies, the funds should be spent on arranging the Adjara region infrastructure, such as painting the facades and development of the Adjara TV Company. In parallel to it nearly 500 eco-migrants are looking for shelter.

Public society is concerned about the USA statements about installation American military radars in the Caucasus. According to specialists, it cannot be allowed, because in this case Georgia will run a serious risk. We should expect the attack every moment. Giorgi Gachechiladze, the leader of the Georgia’s Greens said in his conversation with the Human Rights Centre that we would be attacked by Iran, because American campaign is committed to launch hostilities with Iran.

Our visit in Sweden did not have any literature goal. Just the opposite, it was next business visit of Human Right Center’s representatives to the country - seminar was to be held on human rights and international cooperation. We were also to plan joint projects with Swedish organization.
Protest Demonstrations Replaced Performances

Employees of the Kutaisi Opera and Ballet Theatre have opposed the local government. The reason is 50 000 GEL apportioned to the theatre from the state budget. Present budget for the theatre is the fourth part of the last year one. That money is enough to pay only three-month-salary of the employees.
Women from Gurjaani Administrative Board Were Demanded to Collect Money

Recently, because of Women’s Day, ladies working at the Gurjaani Municipality have been presented with some money. They received 20, 30 or 50 lari as a present during previous years. As for this year, they received gifts according to their salaries-that was half of their monthly salary; however, the women returned 20 lari back to the Administration under the demand of the Head of the Financial-Economic Service Department.

Akhlakalaki is 60 kilometers away from Akhaltsikhe. The road seems to be half-repaired, however they promise to renew road reconstruction works soon. People live with hope here. The Abuli Mountain is covered with snow. Local people have already got used to poor life and severe climate.
