EURO 2012, Europe’s premier national football championship, kicks off June 8 in eight venues throughout host nations Ukraine and Poland. Matches will be held in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Lviv during the month-long competition, with the championship game taking place in Kyiv on July 1.
Activists of Youth Organizations Detained at the Parliament

On May 29, the law enforcement officers arrested the activists of the public movements November 7, Civil Front and Maro Makashvili’s Women Organization. They were holding demonstration in front of the parliament to protest detention of their friends near Gelati on May 26.

Comments On the talk show „100 C”

On April 20, 2012 – Friday the talk show „100 C” was broadcasted on TV Company Imedi. Teenager problems – namely the problems of Hardly upbringing generation – were the main topic of the show, as the authors interpreted. The program caused non-homogenous reaction because of its’ content and the quality of professionalism.

Fight with Trees in the Name of Public Order Protection and Education

More and more trees have been cut down in Tbilisi recently. Despite public protest, trees have been cut down on Moscow Avenue, in Kikvidze Square, in Victory Park and finally on Baratashvili Street as well. Sometimes trees are cut down to make way for police stations, but in Victory Park they were removed for the construction of a media library. Tbilisi City Hall claims that it was necessary to cut down the trees because they could not find alternative space for the police station.

MP Giorgi Tsagareishvili is not going to apologize to the family of the young man, who had beaten his son. “Why should I apologize to them? People broke into my house, five men attacked my son and he hardly survived death and how can they demand me to apologize to them? Let them sue me wherever they want,” Tsagareishvili told Interpresnews.

On May 21, the Human Rights Center gave a press conference on the harassment and maltreatment of journalist Gela Mtivlishvili, editor-in-chief of the Information Center of Kakheti and founder of the Information Center of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, in the Tianeti police station on May 20. The journalist himself and the chairman of the Georgian Bar Association, Zaza Khatiashvili, also attended the press-conference.

What Happened in the Tianeti Police Station

In the morning of May 20 I went to Tianeti to work on a news story. The day before, I got a phone call and was told that social benefits had been cancelled for some Georgian Dream supporters after they had met with the coalition’s leaders. Additionally, a father and his son – the Shushanashvilis – had been held at the police station for four days, and reports said that interrogators intimidated and threatened the two.

To Punish Public Hate or Not?

Should hate speech be punishable by law?! Lately, this question is frequently heard in Georgia. There are two approaches to publicly declared hate speech in the modern world – the American and the European. According to the European approach, hate speech is a criminal offence and thus not protected by freedom of speech. The American approach, on the other hand, does not impose any punishment for similar action.
