Controversy in Akhmeta- 1 wounded, 2 injured people

In the evening of November 9, Vano Davitashvili was wounded as a result of the controversy between Georgian and ethnic Kist people in Akhmeta. He was urgently operated on. Injured during the incident Nodar Chichiashvili and Jokhola Achishvili are also in hospital.
Protest Rally at Gori Prosecutor’s Office

Family members and relatives of Giga Zarkhozashvili, detained during the incident near Gori Justice House held protest rally in front of the Gori Prosecutor’s Office on November 11; they protested dragged out court hearing of the case, which was launched under Article 553 of the Criminal Code of Georgia – resistance to police officers.
Survey on Torture and Inhuman Treatment in Penitentiary Establishments

In the first quarter of 2014 Institute of Social Studies and Analysis conducted a survey in the penitentiary establishments of Georgia under the order of Open Society Georgia Foundation; the purpose was to conduct large-scaled qualitative survey of torture and inhuman treatment practice in Georgian prisons in the period of 2003-2012.

The family of Levan Davitashvili, accused of killing “Starichoka” from Telavi, blames police officers in the violation of their rights. They claim 25 pills of Subotex were planted on the convict. As Davitashvili’s wife Ana Kizikhelashvili said after Levani’s arrest, local police persecutes their family and they urge for help.

A lot of wood is cut and then exported abroad from the mountains of Akhalsopeli village in Khvareli municipality. Locals complained about it with Human Rights Centre. They protested the fact in 2010-2012 too. Local population did not know which company exported the wood.

Nata is 24 years old. She spent summer holidays on the seaside in Kobuleti together with her friend. They met 28 years old G.M on the sea. Nata said when walking on the beach her dress got wet and she returned to the hotel alone to change cloths. (The girls lived in a hostel) G.M. chased her to the hostel and broke into her room; he tried to rape her.
Domestic violence increased in Georgia

According to official data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia [MIA], 77 incidents of physical and 122 incidents of psychological violence in families were observed from January to June 2014 in Georgia. About 30 women were killed as a result of domestic violence the last year.

Population Requests Dismantling of Artificial Barriers on Roads

Artificial barriers, so called “bugaroks” have been installed on the roads in Gurjaani district for the past two years. They were installed mostly close to schools and kindergartens. Initially, population welcomed the initiative; it was requested by big part of population due to security means. However, now the claim their houses are damaged because of barriers and if it lasts longer, the houses will ruin.
Father of Killed Young Man Seeks Justice

On November 30, 2013, Giorgi Khvedelidze, 21, was killed in the yard of his own house in Khashuri. His father protests mitigation of the murderer’s imprisonment term with 2 years. City Court sentenced the convicted person to 10-year-imprisonment but the Appeal Court reduced it at two years; as a result the convict has to serve 8 years in prison.
City council members cannot agree on reimbursement issue

Gori City Council members still cannot agree on the reimbursement amount, necessary for the implementation of their duties. According to the deputy from United National Movement Mindia Goderdzilshvili, Georgian Dream member values freedom of deputies very low. Deputies from opposition parties complain about twice-rejected resolution by the majority members of the City Council; the resolution had to regulate reimbursement of the expenses for deputies.

Former building of the hospital in Gori was assigned to the Ministry of IDPs from Occupied Territories, Refugees and Accommodation for long term accommodation of IDPs in it. Based on the resolution # 320 of the Minister, those IDPs will move to the new building, who lived in horrible conditions in semi-ruined buildings.

Kutaisi Appeal Court Upheld Previous Verdict

Five-year-imprisonment to Ivane Merabishvili, 50 000 lari fine to Zurab Tchiaberashvili – Kutaisi Appeal Court upheld the February 17, 2014 verdict of the Kutaisi City Court. At the trial on October 21, where only former minister of healthcare Zurab Tchiaberashvili participated, the judge did not satisfy solicitations of the defense lawyer and the prosecutor.

Scene of religious controversy in Kobuleti

On September 10, Adjara TV-company reported about the incident about the boarding school of Muslim community in Lermontov Street in Kobuleti; Orthodox people protested opening of the school by hammering a pig-head on the door of the school. The incident became highly resonant. During several days Georgian media actively reported about the incident and follow-up events; society saw real threat of religious conflict in the fact.
