Women prisoners complain about humiliation while they are searched and ask for conjugal visits
Head of Correctional Department, Gogi Gakharia talked with Human Rights Center about those problems, that have been revealed during the monitoring process of N5 correctional facility for women. According to Gogi Gakharia, to eliminate existing problems, several important changes are being planned for N5 correctional facility for women. The issue is related to visits, search and usage of phones and television.

“Crime Witness”- Zaza Azariashvili
On June 16, Human Rights Center held a screening of documentary “Crime Witness”.  The documentary "Crime Witness" is about oppression and persecution of former convict Zaza Azariashvili by law enforcement. Zaza Azariashvili witnessed torture and ill-treatment of a former political prisoner Vakhtang Maisaia in prison. Now he is serving sentence for thivery in Gldani prison N8. 
Human Rights Center Has Started a New Project for Prisoners
Human Rights Center has started a new project called “Establishing Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program for Prisoners in Georgia”.
The project, which aims to promote psychosocial rehabilitation of prisoners, will be implemented in #16 correctional facility of Rustavi. 
Juvenile on Hunger Strike In Kutaisi Prison
In Kutaisi prison N2, 14-year-old S.T. started hunger-strike for the second time for the last month. The reason is protest against Georgian law enforcement officers, in particular against Samtredia District Police and the Prosecutor’s Office.
Health Care Problems of Women Prisoners
Electronic queue of prisoners’ routine operations, medical examinations, post-surgical treatment, providing non-effective medications, nonexistence of pharmacies in correctional facilities – this is a short list of those problems that N5 women correctional facility prisoners talk about. 

Community Service as a Punishment
According to the information of the State Agency for Non-Custodial Sentences and Probation of Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia, usage of community service as a non-custodial sentence has been increased since 2012. According to the official data, this type of sentence was used for 72 cases in 2012, for 260 cases in 2013, for 272 cases in 2014, and in 2015 332 cases are recorded. 

“MY Angels” in Penitentiary Establishment N5 for Female Convicts
A bank robber takes 8 women as hostages and locks them in a room for one night. The women are killing the time in talking, getting know each other closer and reach some kind of catharsis. The hostages even sympathize with the robber after they know the motive for committing the crime. This is the short storyline of the play “My Angels”, which was staged in the Penitentiary Establishment N5 for female convicts.
Due to poor health condition the convict asks for help
The convict Lasha Labadze, who is in the prison N18, due to poor health condition, asks for help. The prisoner has dramatically impaired vision and also requires a lower limb prosthetic. Humanrights.ge has talked to the convicts mother Luba Tatishvili.
Ongoing Rehabilitation and Re-socialization Programs for Former Prisoners
With the initiative of the Minister of Justice in the end of 2012 rehabilitation and re-socialization program was launched, which is implemented by the Crime Prevention Center. It is the first state program, which was created for the assistance of former convicts and its purpose is to promote their rehabilitation.

State of Human Rights in Georgia
In April of 2014 Georgian Parliament adopted National Strategy on Human Rights with the aim to ensure effective realization of human rights with relevant legislative, institutional and practical changes. The document set forth strategic plan to tackle prevalent human rights problems in number of directions, including protection of rights of minorities, combating gender-based violence, safeguarding freedom of religion, ensuring right to peaceful assembly and manifestations, developing mechanism for effective investigation of human rights violations by Georgian law enforcement bodies, and etc...
Public Defender and the Special Preventive Group Member will be Granted the Right to Take Photos in Penitentiary Establishments
On May 1, 2015, the Parliament of Georgia approved “the Code of Imprisonment” and substantial package of related draft laws with the third hearing which gives the Public Defender and the member of the Special Preventive Group the right to make photo recordings in penitentiary establishments starting from September 1, 2016. The legislative package envisages conduction of the institutional reform in the penitentiary system.
Education Problems of Juvenile Prisoners
In accordance to the Article 14 Part I – “b” of the Prison Code of Georgia, accused/convict has right to receive both comprehensive and vocational education. Underage convicts and accused have been enjoying this right for several years already. Nowadays, juvenile convicts are placed in prison # 11 and juvenile accused people are in special facilities of Prison # 8 and Prison # 2.
Prisoner’s Relatives Request Punishment of Doctors
Family of Levan Kortava works on the application to the Kutaisi Appeal Court. On May 12, 2013 ruthlessly beaten 24-year-old prisoner died in Geguti prison # 14; his relatives request impartial investigation into the fact and punishment of perpetrators.
Convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili Urges for Help
On March 23, 2015 convicted Giorgi Marsagishvili from Batumi prison # 3 sent letter to Human Rights Center. The prisoner wrote about extremely unbearable conditions in the penitentiary establishment. According to his letter, life-threatening conditions are purposefully created in the punishment rooms. Giorgi Marsagishvili names concrete people and requests their punishment because they inhumanly treat prisoners.
Juveniles in Jails
According to the data by December, 2014 there are 83 juvenile convicts/accused in the penitentiary establishments of Georgia that is 0.8% of the total amount of convicts in Georgia. According to the December, 2014 data, there are 36 accused and 47 convicted juveniles in Georgia; all of them are boys.
Conditions of Female Convicts in Georgia
According to the December, 2014 data of the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia, 10 372 convicts were in the penitentiary establishments in Georgia; 10 091 of them were men and 281 – women.
