According to the #89 decree of Minster of Corrections and Legal Assistance, if the lawyer wants to meet with several prisoners in the penitentiary department, he/she needs to stand in the line for every meeting. According to the public defender, this might endanger the constitutionally established right of the convict to ask for lawyer’s assistance without delay.

Demonstration In Support of Political Prisoners in Front of Parliament

On October 30 – the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners – the Human Rights Center (HRIDC) organized a protest demonstration in front of the parliament of Georgia. The human rights defenders, family members of political prisoners and politicians joined the demonstration. Their main request was the immediate release of political prisoners who serve their terms in the detention settings of Georgia. They expressed solidarity with the political prisoners and spoke about the difficult situation in this field in Georgia.

Prisoner Ramaz Pataraia is in terrible situation after being physically assaulted– his lower limbs are paralyzed and he moves only in wheelchair; he has post-trauma stress and cramps. The prisoner wrote in explanation letter that during transportation two employees of the prison ruthlessly beat him in Kutaisi prison # 2. Regional Prosecutor’s office of the western Georgia launched criminal case on the incident a year ago but the investigation is prolonged and the trial has not been scheduled yet.

Prisoner Died Because of Incorrect Medical Treatment

Irakli, Giorgi and Nika look at the photo of their father to remember his face; the father Kakhaber Bezhanidze died in prison on September 26, 2009. According to the diagnosis, he died of ulcer on stomach and duodenum and of acute sepsis. The council of the professional development within the State Regulation Agency of the Medical Activities sanctified the doctors who treated Bezhanidze. However, the sanction is only a suspension of the doctor’s license for 4 months. The widow of the dead prisoner Marina Turmanidze states her husband died of the incorrect treatment and is about to request a compensation from the state.

The International Secretariat of OMCT appeals to the high-ranking officials of the government of Georgia regarding the physical assault of Vakhtang Maisaia who was arrested for espionage. They appeal to the president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, secretary of the Security Council of Georgia Eka Tkeshelashvili, the minister of internal affairs Vano Merabishvili, the minister of justice of Georgia Zurab Adeishvili, the chairman of the human rights committee of the parliament of Georgia Giorgi Arsenishvili and the public defender of Georgia Giorgi Tughushi. The OMCT learned about the incident from the member of the OMCT SOS network in Georgia the Human Rights Center.
