President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili stated that most part of the enriched uranium is imported to the Caucasus from Russia. Saakashvili said this in his interview with the news agency “Associated Press”.
Saakashvili said Russia creates instability in the region, and smugglers take advantage of the situation. However, he did not mention the source of the uranium. The president just said that Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia became “black holes” in the security of the region.
The president of Georgia said that if Russia occupied those territories, they should be responsible for spreading nuclear weapon in those territories. He thinks that incidents related to the enriched uranium create serious danger for Georgia.
Saakashvili thinks that the prime-minister of Russia Putin still hopes that they will restore the Soviet Union, and continues geo-political games around Georgia.
Mikheil Saakasvhili spoke about the smuggling of the enriched uranium via Georgia at the Summit of Nuclear Security in Washington. However, he did not say where the uranium is imported to the region from. According to the president, final special operation to neutralize the smugglers was carried out in March.
