Georgian Media Demands to resume Broadcasting of the TV Radio Company “Imedi” Immediately

November 26, 2007

At the Public Defender’s Office directors and journalists for the Georgian media stations singed the appeal to the Georgian Government on immediate resuming the broadcasting of the TV Radio Company “Imedi”.

The appeal reads the following:

“Freedom of expression is one of the most important achievements of the Georgian society. It is impossible to build modern liberal-democratic state unless the right on the freedom of expression is guaranteed.

We think that the challenge on holding early presidential elections and plebiscite regarding the parliamentary elections should be accepted by Georgian society honorably.

The situation is difficult that resulted from the October-November events in Georgia. Herewith we are fully aware that it is necessary to restore the pluralist media environment in the country in order to maintain the democratic development and international authority.

In parallel to it we think that the elections should be held in calm and business atmosphere in compliance to high standards which first of all means negative attitude to any kind violence on media sources. We are sure that most part of our society, as well as the media sources. Thus we consider that TV Radio Company “Imedi” must be immediately resumed which will be a right step towards the development of the democracy.”

The appeal was signed by almost all Georgian media sources.
