Elene Tevdoradze Expects a Reply from the Chairwoman of Parliament Regarding Police Behavior on November 7

November 27, 2007

Elene Tevdoradze, chairwoman of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, is interested in whether criminal cases were launched against policemen who abused their power during the November 7th dispersal of demonstrators. President Mikheil Saakashvili stated that criminal cases should be launched against those people.

Tevdoradze stated today at a bureau meeting that many people had sought her out after President Saakashvili made his statement. “Shall we petition to the Prosecutor’s Office and demand information about it in the name of our bureau or committee?” the MP asked.

The Interim Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Mikheil Machavariani, stated that it is not necessary to petition the Prosecutor’s Office for such information as he will attend to the matter personally and inform Tevdoradze about the issue at the special session of Parliament on November 29th.
