Public Defender’s Office Accuses Law Enforcers of Arbitrarily Detaining a Citizen

November 28, 2007

Georgian Public Defender’s Office demands the Prosecutor General’s Office to react to the arbitrary detention of Dachi Tsaguria, leader of the political movement “Youth Front”. The Public Defender spoke against unlawfully preventing independent journalist Mariam Tsaguria from conducting her professional activities.

Sofio Khorguani, the deputy Public Defender, stated that several articles of the Criminal Code were breached by the above-mentioned acts directed against Kadagishvili and Tsaguria. More precisely, Tsaguria was prosecuted for expressing himself, public activities and criticizing public officials; a journalist was prevented from conducting her professional activities, personal items were damaged and law enforcers abused their power.

The Public Defender’s Office sent corresponding materials to the Prosecutor General’s Office for a further response.
