Abkhaz Authorities Do not Intend to Open Polling Stations for Georgians

Abkhaz de-facto authorities will not open  a singloe polling station for Georgian presidential elections on January 5 2008.

According to Sergei Shamba, Abkhazian de-facto Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abkhazia is not a part of  Georgia and does not intend to participate in Georgian political life.

”Georgian presidential elections have never been held in Abkhazia and it will never be.Georgian central government has not applied to us to open polling stations because they know the answer beforehand, Abkhazia is not part of Georgia,”stated Sergei Shamba.

According to him, if Georgian people in Abkhazia desire to participate in the elections they can go to ”neighbouring country” and vote there.”We do not forbid them to. If they want they can go and live in Georgia,” stated the representative of the separatist government.

According toAbkhazian de-facto government, the administrative border is blocked and armed forces are placed at the border.

Polling districts will not open in de-facto South Osetia too. It must be pointed out that on December 2, approximately 30 polling stations were open in Abkhazia and South Osetia for Russian Duma elections.
