Suicide in Kutaisi Jail

December 18, 2007

The information that a prisoner committed suicide in Kutaisi Jail #2 was officially confirmed after one day. Irakli Cikoria committed suicide on December 16 at dawn. He was hospitalized, but in vain.

Sopho Khorguiani, the deputy public defender, and Madona Basiladze, an attorney for the public defender’s office in West-Georgia, have visited jail #2 and met the prisoners who were in the cell with the deceased.

“Sopho Khorguani and I have met the prisoners who characterize Cikoria as a positive person who they liked. We were interested how he felt in recent times and whether he had been aggressive or had been insulted by anyone etc. We failed in our efforts to find out any information about this. We requested information concerning the prisoner from the penitentiary department. We have details materials about the incident and we will study the issue. The investigation process has already been started,” - states Madona Basiladze.

According to some information, the prisoners in Kutaisi jail #2 live in bad living conditions and their rights are being violated. Presumably, one of the motivations for the prisoner to commit suicide was the existing problems in jail.
