Employee of Telavi Municipality was Arrested for Attempt to Commit Election Fraud

January 8, 2008

Eka Tkesheleashvili, the Minister of Justice, stated that the government immediately reacted on violations during the elections; which is proven by the Telavi incident.

According to Eka Tkeshelashvili, Ivane Feikrishvili, an employee of the Telavi Municipality, who was trying to push several ballot papers in the ballot box in Telavi Polling Station # 1, was detained.

The minister stated that it is still unclear who Feikrishvili was supporting in the elections, but it does not make any difference. A criminal case was launched against the person.

The minister explained that nobody can make statements in favor of any candidate at the poling stations, but outside the stations it is not considered to be a violation.

Tkeshelashvili added that it is not a violation when a public official visits polling station near his/her office and not in his/her residential area.
