Eco-migrant Protests Decision from Social Protection Agency

February 6, 2008
Environmental -migrant Anzor Tsetskhladze, a resident of the Heretkari in Lagodekhi District threatens to commit suicide out protest over his plight. He is experiencing very difficult conditions as disabled person with two minor children at home. The family has not had any income since the Agency for Social Subsidies suspended their allowance under the governmental Poverty Reduction Program.

The eco-migrant blames the agency for its indifference and not taking an even position as to their problems. He says that despite the fact that his family lives in extremely poor conditions, the Agency for Social Subsidies suspended allowances to their family. Thus, the unemployed couple cannot feed their two children.

The assistance for the Tsetskhladzes family was cut on June 27, 2007 on the grounds that they intended to carry out some survey for a second time. The family was to have been aided within the framework of the program. The allowance was the only source for the Tsetskhladzes to maintain their family.

Anzor Tsetskhladze then applied to the Telavi regional Office of the Agency for Social Subsidies but nobody paid any attention to him and that continues to be the situation.

“I applied to the Telavi office but they did not pay attention to me. I have not received any allowance since then.  The health conditions of my children have turned to the worst, and I simply do not have any income,” said the environmental migrant.

The Agency for Social Subsidies reported that the Tsetskhladzes will supposedly receive their allowances within the next three months. However, they might not be aided back to the program and they should be aware of this possibility Gogoladze, an employee of the agency, shared this statement in a conversation with the Human Rights Center in Tbilisi.

Anzor Tsetskhladze has called upon President Mikheil Saakashvili to come to his assistance. Starving eco-migrant, a disabled father of two under-age children, is about to commit suicide.
