Giorgi Mamatsashvili, a journalist has been Hunger striking for the Second Day in front of Publishing house Samshoblo

March 6, 2008
Giorgi Mamatsashvili, the correspondent of newspaper Asaval-dasavali has been hunger striking in front of publishing house Samshoblo for the second day. He demands to return the building of publishing house to journalists.

Mamatsashvili told Medianews that with his protest he expressed solidarity to Malkhaz Basilaia, a journalist of TV-company Mze which was detained by the de-facto government of Abkhazia.

Giorgi Mamatsashvili said that if his demands were not upheld he would start an open-ended starvation. The government has not responded to his demands and other journalists have not joined him as well.
The tender on the publishing house Samshoblo has been cancelled as there were no applications. Therefore the building of the publishing house was placed on the privatization list for the second time. As Giorgi Mamatsashvili alleges when Samshoblo was placed on the privatization list for the first time, the journalists were promised that they would be given the opportunity to make a fellowship with the editors. That’s why he decided to decline from hunger striking at that time, but he expressed his sharp protest in his publications in Asaval-dasavali.
