“Maestro Studio” - Non-traditional Protest over Media License

April 11, 2008

Musical-entertainment TV Channel “Maestro” has reverted to less than typical forms of protest because the Communication National Commission did not grant them with the license to show a social-political programs.

On Aprtil 14 “Maestro” will show the program “Profession-Journalist” at 9:30 PM though the conversation will be covered by music. The conversations during the program will be posted on the web-site: www.myvideo.ge in addition to that people can listen to the program “profession Journalist’ on the radio as well.

The texts will be published in newspapers as it was stated by Mamuka Ghlonti, the director of the “Maestro”.

He stated the program will be broadcasted in similar way until the Maesto receives the legal license to broadcast social-political programs.

Ghlonti stated that Maestro invites all journalists to their protest demonstration that will be held in front of the parliament’s building at 3:00 PM on April 14. The demonstrators are demand that freedom of speech be protected in Georgia.

“Maesto’ holds license on special broadcasting that enables the cable channel to broadcast entertaining, musical and educational programs. Late in November of 2007 the TV Channel applied to the Communication National Commission to grant a new license that would enable them to provide “general broadcasting” – which would mean that they would have the right to show social-political programs. However, on April 4 the Commission chose not to satisfy the application. After that, on April 8, 2008 Maestro applied to the commission to modify the conditions of their license.
