Sozar Subari Protests Opened Letters of the Prisoners

Sozar Subari, the Georgian Public Defender, demands to preserve the right of confidentiality letters that prisoners send to him. Regarding the problem the Ombudsman sent recommendations to Nika Gvaramia, the Minister of Justice and demanded to maintain the confidentiality of the correspondence of the prisoners.

Subari stated that the letters sent by the inmates of the penitentiary establishments to the public defender’s office are opened and the first page is signed by the director of the establishment.

Ombudsman stated that according to the Georgian Organic Law on Public Defender, Article 15 the letters of the prisoners sent to the public defender shall be confidential.

Sozar Subari, in accordance to the Georgian Organic Law on Public Defender, Article 21, paragraph “b”, demands that the problem be resolved.
