Euro Parliament Discusses Recommendations over Georgia

The committee for EU-Georgia collaboration has appealed to the EU to be more involved in the peace process for Abkhazia and South Ossetia.  It is one of the recommendations among various statements and declarations that were accepted by members of the Committee’s tenth sitting.

The sitting was held in the Georgian Parliament on 29-30 April. Marian Isler-Bigan, the chairperson of committee of EU-Georgia Parliament cooperation, said during the press conference that the above-mentioned recommendations will be discussed by Euro Parliament in Brussels sometime next week.

As it is said in the actual text of the committee’s recommendations that any appeals EU should involve the two separatist regions in Georgia in order to regulate existed conflict and find  peace in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and to look for more effective  international mechanisms for  supporting negotiations, peace, legality, order and human rights.
      
Georgian-Russian relationship was considered as being important in the recommendations. As it is said in the text the committee of EU-Georgia parliament cooperation express the committee is concerned about the latest decisions of Russian Federation. Such decisions will deal with the establishment of legal connections with the self-recognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.  

The committee emphasizes that such things like this prevents Georgia from being able to achieve territorial unity, which is recognized by a resolution of UN and the legal effect puts role of Russia as neutral mediator in peace process in question. 

The committee appeals Russia to review its latest decisions and improve its relationships with Georgia.

As Nino Burjanadze the chairperson of Parliament mentioned while speaking to journalists, the European colleagues expressed their respect to Georgian territorial unity and sovereignty by these recommendations and she thanked the representatives of the committee for their contribution.
