Journalists Demand Global Solidarity

May 6, 2008
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) states that in order to win the global war in achieving security, normal working conditions and qualified journalism the journalists must stand together to protect their rights.
In the statement dedicated to the world day of press, the IFJ demands the renewal of the global solidarity for the journalists to overcome together the dangers that the media is facing.
“The future of journalism depends on the solidarity”, stated Jim Bumela, the president of the IFJ. “Struggle for democracy and human rights is the background of the environment that we have to work”.

The IFJ states that propagandistic “stuns” with political intensions and the attempt to hush down the journalists together with limiting editorial budget puts the future of the journalism is in danger.

“Our colleagues from China, Russia, Mexico and Iraq have just expressed their solidarity to us,” stated Bumela. “These are the countries where the journalists are under pressure. Our colleagues will succeed in struggling for their rights if they work together, if they reach all journalists- new or old   and establish strong relationships which are the presupposition for the strong journalism.  The enemies of the freedom of speech will not succeed where unanimity and unity is.”

Arn Conig, the head of the European Federation of the Journalists stated: “The world day of the freedom of press gives us the opportunity to show everyone vividly the importance of the qualified journalism important for developing the democracy. The qualified democracy exists only when the journalists have proper working conditions, and they are respected for the responsibility they been given.”

According to the statement of the European Federation of the Journalists, the pressure being applied on journalists for reveling the sources of their information and the frequent interference of the politicians in journalists’ activities are the main obstacles facing media sources and journalists these days.
