Member of the Egalitarian Institute Detained in Telavi

May 13, 2008

On May 9, 2008 Mikheil Kachkachishvili, member of the Egalitarian Institute was detained in the centre of Telavi, city in Kakheti region. He ended up in the Telavi police department. Reportedly, he was taken in to be tested for drug. The non-governmental organization Egalitarian Institute considers the incident as just another example of political suppression and calls upon the government to stop persecution human rights organizations and the people they represent.

“Of course it was ordered by high-ranking officials from Misha Saakashvili’s criminal authority. You have witnessed how our members and supporters are persecuted because of their different political views. As long as this cruelty reigns in Georgia there will be such impudent people and they may be successful in building police, criminal and a brutal regime. It will only be when death brigades are operational that it will be clear that there is no protection of human rights. And generally, when a human rights defender is detained under the order of the governmental officials, how can we speak about democracy?! We warn those people once more to stop persecuting their own people; otherwise we will be punished under the law in front of the people.”

“All those people who support the government and carries out criminal orders of the National Movement are becoming potential criminal because as they are supporting the construction of a system of violence, injustice and the establishment of a police state.”

“We, of course, will continue to resist all illegal activities as they are implemented and we will expose all their cruel deeds to the Georgian and the international community. Then everybody will see that celebration of Cannibals and Bolsheviks, led by de-facto president Saakashvili, must end in Georgia,” said Jaba Jishkariani, one of the leaders of the organization.
