Police Swear on their Icon Loyalty to Ruling National Movement

May 13, 2008

Sozar Subari, Georgian Public Defender, stated that many complaints about harassment and threats are submitted to their office almost on an hourly basis. People are complaining about the members of the National Movement. Subari made this statement during a press-conference.

Public Defender has established special groups that are authorized to study the situation throughout all Georgian regions.

Sozar Subari studied several incidents personally. “Director of the Public School in the village of Gezruli in Chiatura District was fired because he did not fire seven teachers who had participated in the pre-election campaign of opposition parties during January’s snap presidential elections. Rezo Bitsadze, father-in-law of Nino Burjanadze, chairperson of the Georgian Parliament, is the district governor. Another astonishing fact happened in Svaneti region where the head of the police department made policemen to swear on the icon to vote for the National Movement,” said Sozar Subari.

According to the public defender, there are a many facts of violations, though people avoid making those specific incidents public. They are afraid that high ranking officials at the local level might terrorize them if they would dare go public with their stories.

Sozar Subari sent recommendations to Nika Gvarania, Georgian Minister of Justice and Prosecutor’s Office. The Public Defender demands repressed Georgians be protected and that those from the National Movement stop the persecution.
