Broadcasting of the TV Company “Kavkasia” Was Suspended

May 14, 2008

On May 14, a week before the parliamentary elections on May 21, the broadcasting of the TV Company “Kavkasia” was suspended. The transmitting mechanism on the Tbilisi TV Tower went wrong and it became reason for the delay.

Nino Jangirashvili, director of the TV Company, reported that the damaged device was replaced by a reserve one; though it did not work either.

She also stated that the administration of the TV Station has already purchased the mechanism abroad.

“We will deliver one part of the transmitter on May 15 and we hope custom clearance will soon be completed,” said Jangirashvili.

According to the director of “Kavkasia” she does not hold any valid evident to claim that the transmitter was damaged on purpose.

TV Company “Kavkasia” broadcasts in and in the close surroundings of Tbilisi.

On November 7 last year riot policemen, having dispersed protest demonstration in front of the Parliament Building, rushed into the TV Station and closed it down. The broadcasting of the TV Company was then resumed after Rule of Emergency was cancelled on November 16 2008.

Opposition parties often state that “Kavkasia” is one of independent TV Stations in Georgia.
