Shalva Pichkhadze: the Loser Will Be the First Who Unleashes War in Abkhazia

May 15, 2008

Shalva Pichkhadze, the head of the non governmental organization “Georgia in NATO” considers that it is not suitable for Abkhazia to start a war on its territory; the same situation is for Russia. Russia needs Abkhazian territory for the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2012.

As Shalva Pichkhadze reported to the Medianews Russia aims to keep Abkhazia for Georgia as Damocles’ Sward. Russia wants to manipulate with Abkhazia. He states the loser will be the side who will unleash the war.

“If Georgia is ignorant enough to unleash war in Abkhazia, the country will lose the support from the West and if Russia is the initiator of the war then the West will put immense pressure on them,” this is how Shalva Pichkhadze, a Georgian expert thinks about the situation.

He states the Georgian army has changed since the war in Abkhazia in 1990s. Pichkhadze considers it will be hard for the Russian armed forces who are deployed in Abkhazia to defeat Georgian army but if Russia sends more armed forces, then the world society will see very vividly what Russia’s real intentions are,” states Shalva Pichkhadze.

He thinks that the Georgian government is not wise enough and it is merit of West Countries that Georgian government avoids all kinds of hostilities.

The Georgian expert thinks that the Russian government hopes the naïve government of Mikhail Saakashvili will not be able to maintain peace for long time and will repeat the provocation similar to disreputable Tskhinvali operation in 2004.
