May 16, 2008

UN General Assembly adopted the resolution that demands both sides of the conflict work out a schedule for the repatriation of Georgian IDPs to Abkhazia. According to the resolution, past ethnical composition must be restored in de-facto Abkhazian republic, as was back in 1992 and before the Georgian-Abkhazian war broke out.

Georgian delegation introduced a draft resolution “on the Status of Internally Displaced People from Abkhazia” to the UN General Assembly. However, several countries did not support the resolution including Russia and Armenia. The draft resolution of the project was appreciated by America, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Most countries in the UN did not participate in the vote.

UN Resolution emphasizes the importance of preserving the property rights of refugees and IDPs from Abkhazia, Georgia, including victims of reported “ethnic cleansing”, and calls upon all member states to prevent persons under their jurisdiction from illegally taking the property within the territory of Abkhazia, Georgia, which is in violation of the rights of returnees;

In addition, the resolution of UN General Assembly supports the idea of restoring the same demographic situation in Abkhazia as it was before the conflict and resistance make an attempt to restore the previous demographic situation in Abkhazia.

Moreover, yesterday’s resolution of UN also provides information about ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia and the violation of fundamental human rights and international human rights law in Abkhazia on ethnic grounds.

UN General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly at its 63rd session a comprehensive report on the implementation of the resolution that was adopted on the 15th of May 2008.”
