Masked Men Beat Head of Youth HQ of the Opposition Party

May 20, 2008

Tsotne Ananidze, the head of the Kobuleti Youth HQs of the United Opposition was beaten by four masked persons who he claimed attacked him. However, in spite of such serious claims, the district police have not opened an investigation in the case.

The incident occurred on May 16 at 1:00 PM. The victim says, “On my way to Kobuleti, near the village of Ochkhamuri, a white car blocked pulled across the road and blocked my way. I could not see the tag number. Then four masked men jumped out of the car and said I had to quit the opposition party. He described how they hit him across the face with some metal object, and how he was wounded as a direct result.

Ananidze was returning home to the village of Leghva. “A glue factory was being opened in the village of Khutsubani. First ten members of the National Movement arrived at the opening ceremony of the factory. We, young members of the United Opposition took exception to them showing up and started protesting. Locals also joined us and now the PR campaign of the National Party failed. We had a serious argument with the police who were mobilized at the scene. They claimed that we did not have right to use banners and tried to take them from us.

The head of the Youth Organization applied to the police department for assistance. However, no investigation has been opened thus far.
