Human Rights Center Request to Hold District Governors Accountable

June 20, 2008

The Human Rights Center requests the Kakheti regional governor to impose disciplinary punishment on Telavi, Lagodekhi, Sighnaghi and Kvareli district governors.

On June 4 the Human Rights Center requested district administrations to provide public information about those media sources that were funded from district budgets. The centre inquired was based on what regulation provided for the kind of services that the media sources had to be funded. The Human Rights Center has not received a reply from Telavi, Lagodekhi, Sighnaghi and Kvareli administrations within the stipulated term required under the Georgian General Administrative Code.

The Human Rights Centre stated that inactivity of the district governors contradicts the terms of acting Georgian legislation. By blocking access to public information, the governors breached have violated the right to freedom of information.

The complaint was already sent to the Kakheti Regional Administration. If the request is not satisfied, the lawyers of the organization will take a legal suit to court.
