Kasristskali Villagers Requests Assistance

June 27, 2008

The village of Kasristskali faces serious problem because of its location. The village is in Akhmeta district but it the same as being three hundred kilometers away. Long distances villagers effectively prevent people from being able to get in touch with government authorities.  Those living in the village of Kasristskali are now requesting that central authorities resolve their problems.

Kasristskali is located at Georgia-Azerbaijan border near the village of Kvemo Kedebi in Dedoplistskaro district. However, officially it is within Akhmeta District. In spring and winter villagers cannot travel to the district center because of severely damaged road.

Locals reported their plight to the Human Rights Center that various departments of the Dedoplistskaro Municipality Board, including district first aid medical service which has refused to assist their village. The reason is the fact that Kasristskali is within Akhmeta District and local people should be supported from Akhmeta Municipality Board.

Because of the destroyed road, villagers cannot even travel to Dedoplistskaro, not to mention to go all the way to Akhmeta. In fact, the village is completely abandoned and the majority of locals are not able to take part in the government’s poverty reduction program.
