100 Teachers Laid-off from Gurjaani Music Schools

July 2, 2008

Lali Miminoshvili, head of the Union of Gurjaani Municipality Music Schools has dismissed more than 100 teachers from five schools in the Gurjaani district.

The teachers informed the Human Rights Center that they had signed 3 month contracts with the Union. The contracts expired on June 30 and Lali Miminoshvili, the head of the Union refused to prolong them. Miminoshvili threatened the teachers if they decided to appeal her decision; Zura Miminoshvili, her brother and the head of a department within the Ministry of Culture would cause them problems in retaliation.

Lali Miminoshvili does not deny the fact that she had dismissed the teachers. However, she says that she had not threatened anyone.
