Neither Electricity Nor Water-Unbearable Living Conditions for IDPs and Eco-migrants

July 8, 2008

IDPs and eco-migrants residing in the former hospital for drug-addicts had both water and electricity supply cut off. Initially, the mental hospital located next to their building cut off their water supply several days ago. The residents of the building collect rain water to wash up.

“Now they have cut off water supply too. Can you imagine, they left us without water in summer? They offer some alternative water supply but repair-works should start on it because the outfall is swampy and we cannot drink that dirty water,” said people residing in the former hospital for drug-addicts.

IDPs recall that the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Welfare of the Adjara Autonomous Republic promised them to lodge them in normal alternative building when they were evicted from the hotel. “It is an alternative building that is standing on the swamp? Did they repair the hospital when the authority apportioned money for it? They have lodged us in ruined building and now they are cutting all living conditions.”

Irakli Baramidze, Deputy Minister of Adjara Labor, Health and Social Welfare, stated that the population has not applied their ministry for assistance. “I cannot understand why they do not want to supply the building from the new alternative source; how do they know that it is bad water? Have they tested it?”

22 IDP and 26 Eco-migrant families live in darkness and without water. the population intends to hold protest demonstration in near future.
