Shida Karti’s Human Rights Centre Representatives Demands Head of Culture Department Punished

July 25, 2008

The Human Rights Centre Shida Kartli Office representatives demand that the head of Gori Municipality punishes Zurab Chkheidze, the head of Culture Department.

Since Zurab Chkheidze has become the head of Culture Department of Gori Municipality, the schoolteachers and principals are finding themselves being intimidated more often than before. There were three incidents of intimidation: The first one was when Zurab Chkheidze invited Gori school principals and demanded they banned humor variety shows at schools. Zurab Chkheidze confirmed this information.

The second one was when Chkheidze forced Avto Shoshiashvili, honorary coach to have to have the boxing school. Chkheidze replaced Shoshiashvili with Beka Lobzhanidze, 27 Shoshiashvili’s pupil and a boxer who had a big success on the World Championship. It is noteworthy that Lobzhanidze was arrested for stealing from a shop. Consequently, on March 1st, 2008 the International Boxing Federation disqualified him from European Championship Qualification Tournament in Italy.

The last incident occurred in the Gori Theater: Zurab Chkheidze invited Gori Theater art director to his chamber and demanded that he write a letter of resignation.
