Ethnic Ossetian Head of Akhalgori Police Department Supports Abuse against Georgians

September 22, 2008

South Ossetian separatists might abolish restrictions on free entrance to Akhalgori District. Nowadays a rule is functioning in Akhalgori District which restricts non-residents of the district from being able to freely enter into Akhalgori. Anyone who violates this rule is fined 500 GEL.

Zurab Pitskhelauri, Akhalgori District Governor told news agency Media news that Tolik Margiev, head of South Ossetian de facto government Akhalgori administration promised Pitskhelauri to speak with the representatives of de facto Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) government and try to convince them to abolish the restrictions on the entrance to Akhalgori district of non-residents. Margiev is subordinated to the Tskhinvali de facto government and it does not come as a surprise that he said such thing to Pitskhelauri, as he is instructed by Tskhinvali separatist government as what he can and cannot do.

“Tolik Margiev even suggested that Georgians could start working in Akhalgori District de facto Police Department. He said it would promote safety measure protection in the district.  He told me that they could not control Ossetian criminal gangs alone, and he was interested in cleaning the district from Ossetian criminals. He also said that problems were politically based and he had to agree things with his government. We will know the de facto government’s answer with three days,” stated Zurab Pitskhelauri, Akhalgori District Governor to Media news.

An inhabitant of Ikoti village, Akhalgori District told Media news that Ilo Khubulovi, new head of Ossetian created Police Department in Akhalgori District supports Ossetian criminal groups in abusing and robbing Georgians. “Robbed things are kept in the building that is located in front of the police department office. Yesterday in the evening drunken Ossetian soldiers opened fire at the house of Nokolishvili family in the village of Alevi. The family dog was killed and the whole house has been shot up.  The family was in the house during the shooting. Fortunately, no one was injured and especially that nobody died. The situation is completely uncontrolled in the more difficult to access villages of the Akhalgori District. Ossetian criminals have a free hand in abusing people, especially in these villages and no one is able to resist them,” informed an inhabitant of Ikoti village of Akhalgori District to Media news.
