Inhabitants of Telavi Municipality Accuse Wissol Petrolium Georgia of Extortion

September 25, 2008

The inhabitants of Telavi Municipality accuse the administration of the gas distribution company in for extortion of and abuse of power.

The inhabitants of Telavi Municipality informed the Human Rights Center that the gas distribution company belonging to the oil company Wissol Petrolium Georgia is forcing its clients to install new gas meters. This is when the Telavi inhabitants say that they have already installed the meters which had been inspected and approved by a special lab. However, the gas distribution company still insists that the population must now install a new meter that cost 240-GEL-cost meters. If not the distribution company threatens with stopping gas supply.

After Wissol Petrolium Georgia bought Telavgas the gas installment price quadrupled in residential buildings. It fluctuates now from 600 to 700 GEL.

Gia Benidze, head of gas distribution company Telavgas declined to comment on the Telavians’ accusations.  The Human Rights Center contacted the Press Department of Wissol Petrolium Georgia. However, no one wished to make any comments there.

The Telavians are planning to hold a protest in front of Wisson Petrolium Georgia administrative body in the near future.
