Gurjaani Town and 15 Villages of Gurjaani District without Drinking Water

October 3, 2008

The Human Rights Center was informed Gurjaani town and 15 villages of Gurjaani District have not received drinking water for the 5th day and counting.

Givi Lazariashvili , head of “Gurjaani Tskalkanali” (Gurjaani water distribution company) told that Gurjaani Tskalkanali has not paid its electiricty bill to JSC Kakheti Energodistribution and therefore the energy supply company has cut off electricity to Gurjaani Tskalkanali. This is why the water distribution company is unable to work and cannot provide water to the population.

Lazariashvili informs that Gurjaanis Tskhakanali is partially funded by Gurjaani local budget. In the last two months, the Gurjaani district governor’s office has not transferred approximately 60, 000 GEL to Tskalkanali.

Nika Nizharadze, head of Department of Infrustructure within the Gurjaani District Governor’s Office can not specify the date when  the money was transacted to Gurjaanis Tskalkanali from the local budget. Consequently, no one knows for sure when Gurjaani district inhabitants will again have a supply of safe drinking water.
