Sighnaghi District Governor Fired

October 16, 2008
Zaza Zedelashvili, Sighnaghi district governor has been fired. Reportedly, residents of Sighnaghi accused him for having violated their property rights. Commission on Ownership of Lands canceled the property certificates of 12 people short time ago. Niko Dznelashvili, the chairperson of the commission, reported to the Human Rights Center before he resigned that he and his institution canceled certificates because of the repression that was coming down from the Sighnaghi district governor as well as several high-ranking officials.

The victimized property-owners are protected by the lawyers of the Human Rights Centre. A criminal case has been opened based on the evidence where property rights were violated. Kakheti regional prosecutor’s office is leading up the investigation.
