Human Rights Center Blames Kakheti Regional Prosecutor for Misuse of Power

October 22, 2008

The Human Rights Center requests the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate the activities of Tamaz Tsabutashvili, Kakheti regional prosecutor and to respond to his illegal activities should they be discovered.

Representatives of the organization explain that Tamaz Tsabutashvili protects public officials who previously were suspected or condemned for crimes that such behavior demonstrates a misuse of his power. More precisely, investigators of the Kakheti regional prosecutor’s office estimated that officials of the Telavi Municipality board and Administration misappropriated humanitarian aid food that was designated for IDPs. Though, nobody was charged for the crime.

Kakheti regional prosecutor does not react to such the criminal activities of Nugzar Abulashvili, member of the Georgian Parliament and head of the Sighnaghi district branch of National Movement. The MP was accused of misusing his power and corruption on several occasions.

The brother of Kakheti regional prosecutor illegally purchased lots in the town of Tsnori in Sighnaghi district. In addition, the Sighnaghi district administration leased out 50 hectares of land to that person in spite of the fact that it was prohibited at the moment. Vazha Dierashvili, the chairperson of the Lease Commission added the name of Tamaz Tsabutashvili in the August 2006 protocol was entered a bit later.

Kakheti regional prosecutor has his own business-interests. Lands were seized from the residents of the village of Karajala in Telavi district, as well as from various organizations, and these acts were somehow connected with the name of the prosecutor. The latter built the market for beef in the area. If the Prosecutor General’s office is ready to launch investigation on the above-mentioned cases the Human Rights Center is ready to provide all corresponding materials to the prosecutor’s office.
