Additional Forces Mobilized by Russia Federation in Tskhinvali Region

Shota Utiashvili, head of Information-Analytical Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia assumes that Russia might be planning to escalate situation on the territory of former South Ossetian Autonomous District.

Utiashvili stated on a press conference that the number of Russian soldiers increased with 2 000 men during the last one week. He informs they have relocated in the Java Gorge. A total of 40 units of heavy artillery along with several hundreds of militants were sent from Tskhinvali to Akhalgori.

Shota Utiashvili assumes that in all there are a total of 7 000 Russian soldiers to mobilized on the territory of former South Ossetian Autonomous District. There were some provocative acts in the region, for instance blowing up of cars belonging to Georgian police officers.

“Hence, we can assume that Russia has started planning to escalate situation in the region,” noted Shota Utiashvili.
