Forced Resignation of School Director because of Cooperation with Journalists

October 30, 2008
Tamila Dzmanashvili, director of the union of art and sport schools in the  Sighnaghi district forced  Rusudan Kokiashvili, director of the music school in the village of Tibaani, to resign  because of her cooperation with journalists.

Reportedly, teachers of the Tibaani music school had not received their salaries for July, August and September as of October 16. In addition, despite the fact that an official document was issued, the director of the union verbally ordered teachers not to allow children from large families and orphans to study at the school without having to first pay tuition fees. In was in spite of the fact that Sighnaghi district budget envisaged providing expenses for the tuition for such children.

Inhabitants of the village of Tibaani reported the Human Rights Centre about the problem. A correspondent of the organization published an follow-up article about the fact and consequently, the teachers were finally able to receive their salary arrears. As for orphans and children from large families, they were still allowed to take music lessons free-of-charge. Nevertheless, the Sighnaghi Municipality Board held Rusudan Kokiashvili accountable for having informed the journalist and she was subsequently fired from her position. Rusudan Kokiashvili confirmed that the reason for her so-called resignation was because of having cooperated with journalists.

Tamila Dzmanashvili stated that labor contract with Kokiashvili finished on September 11, 2008 and she was on her position until October 13, 2008 but without a valid labor contract.
