Police Ineffective in Protecting Telavi TV Journalist from Violence

November 12, 2008

Yesterday, the TV item released by the Telavi based TV Company “Tanamgzavri” was controversial as it informed the society that correspondents who arrived at the village of Karajala, Telavi district, to cover the an incident had been threatened.. Representatives of one of the parties to the incident reverted to the use of physical force against journalists and did not let them film the event. Police officers from Kakheti regional department of the Internal Ministry witnessed how abusers prevented journalists from performing their professional activities. However, the so called law enforcers turned a blind eye and did not stop the harassers.

Yesterday, police officers from Telavi department wanted to evict Aliosha Orujov, his wife and under-age child from their house based on arbitrage court decision. The relatives and neighbors resisted the police officers and law enforcers proceeded to assault them.

Ia Guliashvili, correspondent for the TV Company “Tanamgzavri”, reported that representatives of Iasha Usupov, the opponent of Orujov, prevented their team from working. They did not let the camera operator to shoot the incident and then abused him. During the argument the camera was damaged. The journalist asked the police officers, who were standing nearby, for help but the law enforcers failed to react to the crime whatsoever.

The Human Rights Center appeals to the prosecutor’s office to immediately investigate the professional malfeasance of the police from Telavi.
