Inhabitants of Gali District forced from their Homes

November 18, 2008

Russian occupiers that have left the village Chuburkhinji and relocated in the tea enterprise territory near the village of Achigvara, Gali District are expelling locals.

The inhabitants of Gali District informed Media Center of Abkhazia that Russian officers and soldiers forced the owners of wooden barracks to move to other, older buildings where there are unbearable living conditions. The Russians are now living in the barracks, which have better conditions at the expense of the locals.

The four evicted families that live in Achigvara, who are also of Russian origin and were forced asked the local government to repair the buildings in which that they now must live.

About 400 heavily armed Russian solders and officers are deployed in the tea enterprise territory. Their presence is not welcomed, and is clearly causing problems among the local population, regardless of ethnicity.
