Georgian Books Burned Gali District Public Schools and School Girls Insulted

November 20, 2008

Russian troops and Abkhaz separatists burn Georgian books in the schools of Gali district and insult school girls from the lower grades.

Today, Aleksandre Aplakov, Minister of Education and Culture of Abkhazia stated at the press-conference, Russians and Abkhazians have burned Georgian books in Georgian schools. In their place, they distributed Russian books under duress that were delivered from Moscow.
Teachers of Georgian Language and Literature were dismissed from schools. Russians check pupils going to school at checkpoints whether they have Georgian books in bags or not. Drunken Russian soldiers go about taunting and insulting girls.

“The situation is extremely tense in Gali district. Schools are categorically prohibited to cooperate with international and non-governmental organizations. However, we managed to cooperate with them. At the lessons in the town, children are taught that they are Megrelians and not Georgian and that Putin and Medvedev are their national heroes. Several teachers were fired on grounds of nationalism. Georgian language teachers and literature are totally denied the opportunity to work, and their names have been purged from the list of teachers. These facts create a situation that we should discontinue the educational process in the Gali district. We do not have the human resources to conduct lessons in the Russian language. Teachers from Gali told us that if the situation lasts for a long time, they will abandon school outright. The incident that occurred today in Ganmukhuri, (Abkhazian separatists opened fire at our people), and this demonstrates that Abkhazian and Russian sides do not want to keep the peace.

Reportedly, the house of one local resident in Ganmukhuri was burnt down as a result of the gunfire. Our position is not to reply to their provocations until it is possible,” said Aleksandre Aplakov.
