Relatives of Prisoners Dissatisfied with Activities of Bailiffs

November 24, 2008

According to the information of the Human Rights Center employees of the bailiff service within penitentiary department are extorting money from the relatives of prisoners.

Relatives of the prisoners claim that bailiffs of the penitentiary department allow only those relatives to meet their prisoners who pay money to them; the estimated price for visiting ranges from 50 GEL till 200 GEL.

Attorneys from Gurjaani also confirm the fact that bailiffs demand relatives to pay money in order to allow them to take food and sweets to the prisoners.

The public relation department of the penitentiary department denies that this is the common practice
