Georgians from Fereidan Have Departed Gurjaani

December 3, 2008

Reportedly, because of unbearable living conditions Georgian from Fereidan, Iran left the village of Akhasheni in Gurjaani district, returning to Iran.

“Living conditions are better in Iran, as it is very difficult to live here. The state does not assist us whatsoever Very often we do not have the most basic of food,” said Akhmad Batavani.

Currently, only three families of Georgians from Fereidan remained in the village and they continue to live under dire conditions. (Ethnic Georgians were resettled in the beginning of XVII century by Persion invaders.  These people remained there for many centuries but maintained their native language though converted to Muslim religion and lived in modern Iran.  In the XX century a small part of these people were resettled back to Kakheti region, Georgia on their homeland).

According to the official information Georgian from Fereidan settled in Akhasheni in 1972.  Georgian from Fereidan settled in the village of Shashiani in Gurjaani district but now none of them continue to live there.
