Prosecutor’s Office Launched Criminal Investigation of Torture of Detainee

December 4, 2008

On December 3 Gurjaani district prosecutor’s office launched criminal investigation on the beating of 22-year-old Gaga Pitiurishvili. It is thought that he was beaten by police officers.

Lawyer for the Human Rights Center appealed to the prosecutor’s office with the request to launch an investigation. Law enforcers had to interrogate Pitiurishvili as a witness but he had his freedom restricted during one night. The witnesses were also beaten in regard to this case.

According to the confirmed information during the interrogation, Gaga Pitiurishvili denied the fact of being beaten. Lawyers of the Human Rights Center stated that it was evident that police oppressed the detainee and compelled him to deny that he had been beaten. If he had not obeyed their demands, the law enforcers threatened him to plant drugs on him that would result in his long term imprisonment.
