December 23, 2008

On December 18 Nana Chalatashvili, judge at the Lagodekhi district court, satisfied the suit of the correspondent for the online newspaper of the Human Rights Center and ordered the administration of the Lagodekhi district police department to pass case materials on Giorgi Gvelukashvili to the journalist. Gvelukashvili was compelled to commit suicide.

According to the case materials, journalist Gela Mtivlishvili appealed to Lagodekhi district court on June 20 and requested to study the case materials on Giorgi Gvelukashvili who was compelled to commit suicide. Although the investigation was dropped on the case because of lack of evidence on crime, the police refused the journalist to give materials. After that, Mtivlishvili brought administrative suit to the court and requested the materials under the law.

Before that, Georgian Public Defender Sozar Subari applied to Malkhaz Shubitidze, the head of Lagodekhi police department, and recommended to issue case materials to the journalist. The head of the police department did not consider the request of the ombudsman.

It is noteworthy that online newspaper got interested in the case after the journalist was reported that Gvelukashvili had not committed suicide, he was murdered.
