Electricity Cut off for Former Neighbors

January 15, 2009

The Human Rights Center was contacted by the inhabitants of the village of Daba Gantiadi, Khelvachauri district. They claimed that Electricity Distribution Company demands them to pay electricity arrear of those neighbors who do not live in their village any more.

“The family of Tengiz Shavadze moved to Khulo from the village of Gantiadi three years ago. However, we had electricity cut off because this family had not paid the bill before removal” said the locals.

The village Gentiadi has another problem: there was a fire in the village. Several houses were burnt down and destroyed. For some reason the owners of those houses receive electricity bills even though they do not live in the houses any more. The overall debt of the village is 11 000 GEL.

The administration of the Khelvachauri Service Center of the electricity distribution company does not discuss the problem with the villagers. The locals said that the security guard of the office did not even let them inside the service center.
