Relatives Are Not Allowed to See Prisoners

February 12, 2009

Relatives are not allowed to meet prisoners in Batumi Prison #3 and people complain about it.

“We did not have similar problems about meetings before. If you are not a family member, you have no right to meet the prisoner,” complain the people.

Batumi office of the Human Rights Centre got in touch with Aleko Shvelidze, the Deputy Director of Batumi Prison # 3, and requested for comments on this information. He said that visitors can see prisoners in accordance with Georgian Law on Imprisonment. No amendments have been introduced in the law in this regard. Probably there had been some exceptions in the rule before but it will not happen now. Everyone, who has right to meet a prisoner, can enter the prison.”
